Key takeaways

  • The Wellness Wheel is a simple, holistic framework that helps you understand how balanced your life feels across eight key areas of well-being.

  • Reflecting on each area of the wheel can help you recognize what’s supporting your well-being, where you may feel stuck, and what you’d like to improve.

  • Using the Wellness Wheel with intention — on your own or with a mental health coach — can help you set meaningful goals and strengthen your overall sense of balance and identity.

Identify successful areas in your life, and ones that need more attention

The Wellness Wheel is a holistic tool that helps you identify areas in your life that are going well and those that may require more attention. Identifying these areas can help you strengthen your sense of identity. The Wellness Wheel is divided into eight domains: Social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, environmental, financial, and occupational. Experts believe that in order to achieve optimal health and well-being, you should tend to all eight domains.

Why each domain is important

  • Each domain of the wellness wheel contributes to overall balance, helping maintain physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being.

  • Focusing on all areas ensures that neglect in one domain doesn’t negatively impact others, promoting long-term health and resilience.

  • Understanding the significance of each domain allows you to recognize strengths and identify areas that may need extra attention.

How to choose which areas to focus on

  • Reflect on your current lifestyle and pinpoint domains where you feel imbalanced or lacking fulfillment.

  • Set realistic, actionable goals for improvement in specific areas without overwhelming yourself.

  • Reassess regularly to adapt your focus as your needs, priorities, and circumstances change over time.

Using the Wellness Wheel to explore each dimension of wellness

By examining each dimension of wellness through this visual resource, you can better understand your current balance and identify areas for growth. The included exercise is designed to build strength in areas that need more support and encourage sustainable habits that support long-term well-being.

Wellness Wheel

Looking at each area of wellness on the wheel, reflect on the following questions. You may want to jot down your responses on a piece of paper and discuss them with a mental health coach:

  1. Assign each area a number from 1 to 10 based on how well this area is going in your life, with 1 being the least successful and 10 being the most successful.

  2. What is going well in each area? Why did you assign the number you did?

  3. What would you like to improve in this area?

Choose 1 or 2 areas to focus on with a coach (or on your own). You don’t have to choose the areas that are least successful. Choose the ones you want to. Incorporating simple mindfulness practices, such as walking meditation or exploring comfortable meditation positions, can be a helpful way to support your growth in multiple dimensions of wellness.
