One in Three UK Employees Have Checked Out at Work and Distrust Their Leaders, Headspace Finds
Headspace survey reveals 41% of UK employees report rising mental and cognitive strain, with 32% distrustful of leadership, feeling emotionally checked out, and experiencing unmet mental health needs
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — August 12, 2026 06:00 AM PDT — Headspace, the leading mental health companion for everyday support, today released a Workforce State of Mind Report in the UK and Europe, showing the chronic strain crisis has crossed the Atlantic. Similar to findings from its U.S. report, the data reveal rising mental and cognitive strain in the UK, with 41% of employees at companies with over 1000 people saying their strain has increased over the past year. This has led to 32% each of those employees feeling cognitive strain, feeling emotionally checked out and distrustful of leadership, and saying that their organisation isn’t meeting their mental health needs.
For UK workers, ongoing uncertainty at work has been a defining theme this year. Unclear or shifting priorities (39%) and job insecurity (36%) are the biggest drivers of strain, more than the pace of organisational change itself (27%) or new technologies like AI (24%). This instability has continued to play out; among those hit by the pace of organisational change or new technologies over the past year, 60% experienced restructuring or layoffs, 55% faced budget cuts, and 53% reported using new technologies such as AI and automation. Employees are still absorbing one change while bracing for the next.
“Many organisations are struggling to navigate an unpredictable business market, while employees are absorbing constant change without a clear roadmap and weakening trust in leadership,” says Lisa Mulrooney Gross, chief people officer at Headspace. “UK employees aren't asking for less change, but rather more clarity and support while they navigate it. To support the full workforce, leaders need transparent communication, daily access to mental health support, and managers trained to have honest conversations about how change affects people before things escalate.”
Other key findings from the report:
Strain isn’t staying at the office. Nearly 65% of UK employees say it has affected their ability to be present with family and friends at least once in the past year.
Roughly two-thirds (64%) of UK employees haven't had a single hour of resilience, stress management, or change management training.
Only 8% say their organisation fully meets their mental health needs.
The rise in strain has hit sleep the hardest, with a direct impact on performance at work. Nearly 76% of UK employees say strain has hurt their sleep at least once in the past year, and 47% say it's compromised their judgment when using AI and new tools.
74% of employees report mental or cognitive strain has negatively affected their ability to focus, and their productivity.
Over half (53%) of UK employees have adopted AI and other new technologies over the past 12 months, but 32% of all UK employees still don't trust the output and 28% fear the technology could ultimately displace them.
Nearly a quarter (23%) say they don't understand how to appropriately use the new tools they've been given, and 21% point to poor performance or inconsistent availability of the tools themselves.
17% worry new tools will increase their workload rather than reduce it.
In addition to surveying UK employees, Headspace also included findings from separate employee surveys in France and Germany. The report includes recommendations for what organisations can do next by supporting employees where they are, before challenges escalate. View the full report here.
Methodology
Headspace commissioned YouGov to conduct an online survey among 513 total UK workers aged 18+ years, employed full-time at companies with more than 1,000 employees. Data was collected between June 4th - 8th, 2026.
