Headspacer of the Month: Chris Brisley
We believe meditation is for everyone – in fact, the range of people united by the practice is one of the things that makes the Headspace community so unique. Here we talk to Christopher Brisley who is taking the time to get some Headspace every day.
We believe meditation is for everyone – in fact, the range of people united by the practice is one of the things that makes the Headspace community so unique. Here we talk to Christopher Brisley who is taking the time to get some Headspace every day.
Why did you start using Headspace?
I'd been having a tough time when a good friend and ex-British Olympic highboard diver, Leon Taylor, gave me a trial of Headspace. I've been using it ever since.
How long have you been meditating?
I've been meditating on-and-off for ten years, but Headspace gave me a structured, less judgmental approach that has enabled me to continue the process on a regular basis and carry it with me throughout the day. It's helped me enormously.
What do you do for a living?
I'm the founder and CEO of Take a Challenge. We tell inspirational stories about how people conquer their health, fitness and outdoor challenges, and share informative articles and blogs to help them learn about living a happier, healthier more fulfilled life.
But the other side of that question is: how do I earn money? As an ultra-endurance athlete and adventurer, I work with global brands, predominantly in the health, fitness and outdoor space, on their various challenges. I test and promote their products in difficult and challenging environments.
I'm also a public speaker on a number of topics – social media, entrepreneurship and inspiration. I talk at seminars, events and (most challenging but very rewarding) I work with young people in schools and colleges.
If you weren’t doing that, what would you be doing?
I'd be surfing – living in my shorts and flipflops with no responsibility. I tried that, but my inner voice kept telling me that I had much more to give.
What’s your favorite time of day?
The morning – I wake everyday at 6am. (I call this 6amCLUB.) It's a process I created to set up my day in the most inspired way possible. I go for a run or do some yoga, followed by some Headspace and then a great breakfast, before I let the outside world in.
What’s the best moment of your life?
My best moment is now. It's something I work hard to live by. But a memorable time in my past...summiting Mount Elbrus in Russia in -30 degree temperatures with my friends, that was an incredible experience. Being rescued off the mountain – not so much, but that's another story.
And the worst?
I served for 10 years in the Royal Navy and was medically discharged. It took me 4 years to rebuild my life and then I was hit by a car while cycling. I suffered spinal and other injuries. My life has never been the same.
What’s your favorite sound?
Birds in the morning.
What three things would you take with you to a desert island?
Water filter, large knife, flint for fire making. (My girlfriend just asked why I wouldn’t take her – oops.)
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
It is what it is, accept it then change it.
What’s the biggest lesson that meditation has taught you?
Don't judge people or experiences with simplicity. In society we're taught to label everything as good or bad, but compared to what? Let go of the need to judge and label anything to feel ok.
What piece of advice would you give people sitting down to meditate for the first time?
There is no such thing as a bad meditation. Stay with it – the rewards in your life and in yourself are immeasurable.
