Unfamiliar Doesn't Mean Unsafe
Many of us believe we need to feel completely sure before making a big decision. But what if waiting for certainty is what's preventing us from growing? This episode explores how loosening our grip on certainty can open the door to possibilities we couldn't have planned.

(soft music) Headspace Studio. (soft music) Hi, this is Dora and welcome to "Radio Headspace." You know, the mind really likes to know what's coming next. It likes a plan, a sense of direction, something it can hold onto. And when it doesn't have that, when things feel uncertain or unclear, it can get a little uncomfortable, maybe even a lot uncomfortable. Because without that sense of predictability, it can feel like we're just kind of suspended somewhere in between where we've been and where we're going. And the mind doesn't always know what to do with that space. I've been in that space a few times in my own life. One that stands out is when I decided to leave nursing and become a full-time meditation teacher. I was kind of the first in my family to take a path like that. There wasn't really a blueprint or a clear next step. And even though it felt right, it also felt scary. I remember my mind going back and forth constantly. Is this the right decision? Can I actually do this? What if it doesn't work out? And underneath all of that, there was this subtle fear of failing, of having to explain why I chose something different, even though a part of me knew I wanted to try. (soft music) And it's interesting because when the path isn't clear, the mind doesn't just sit still. It starts to fill in the gaps, imagining outcomes, replaying possibilities, preparing for things that haven't even happened yet, almost like it's trying to create a sense of certainty where there isn't any. And in a way it makes sense. It's trying to find something solid to stand on. But when there's no example, no clear direction, that sense of safety can feel a little harder to access. And just because something feels unfamiliar, doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. (soft music) I felt that again when I decided to start my mindfulness school. There wasn't a clear model for what I wanted to create. I didn't know if people would sign up. I didn't know how it would be perceived or what the outcome would be. And for a while, I stayed in preparation mode, just trying to get it right and feel fully ready. But the more I tried to think my way into certainty, the more stuck I felt. Until one day I had this realization, there wasn't going to be a perfect moment. There wasn't going to be a version of this where I felt 100% sure. And something about that actually felt freeing because it shifted the question from, "Is this the right decision?" To something a little softer like, "Can I stay with this even without knowing what comes next?" (soft music) And I think this is something many of us experience, especially when we're doing something new or different, or something that doesn't come with a clear path. The mind wants clarity, but life doesn't always offer...
