(light music) Hi, friends. It's Rosie here. Welcome to "Radio Headspace" and to Friday. So I wanna share a deeply personal story with you about my relationship with my dad. He has struggled with alcohol addiction for many, many years, and we've been through some incredibly tough times. One of the most difficult moments was when he landed in the hospital a few years ago and we thought we were going to lose him. If you've ever dealt with someone in the throes of addiction, I'm sorry, I feel you, and I'm here with you. It's one of the hardest things to go through: seeing someone actively in their addiction and feeling powerless to stop it. I remember hearing a quote once that said, "Addiction is the only prison where the locks are inside." The practice of loving kindness was a powerful tool during some of our toughest moments. So today, we're wrapping up our week on loving kindness, discussing how it has the power to transform our relationships. Whether it's with family, friends, or even strangers, embracing loving kindness can deeply impact how we connect with others and ultimately improve the quality of our lives. But I wanna acknowledge that it's not always easy. When you're dealing with something as emotionally charged as a loved one's addiction, practicing loving kindness can feel incredibly hard, and at times, feel impossible. In these situations where emotions run high and hurts run deep, loving kindness becomes not just a practice, but a crucial anchor. It helps us navigate these turbulent waters with a little more grace, empathy, and strength, allowing us to hold space for both our pain and the pain of those we care about. So my dad's battle with addiction has been a significant part of my life for as long as I can remember. There were times when his addiction led to behavior that was hurtful and destructive, not only to himself, but also to those around him. Seeing someone you love in such pain and struggling with something so powerful is devastating. There were moments when I had to set boundaries for my own well-being, boundaries that often were broken. There were also times when I didn't speak to my dad because his actions were too harmful for me to bear. This was not an easy decision, and it was one I made with a heavy heart. I sought therapy on several occasions to help me deal with the pain and confusion that came with loving someone actively in their addiction. What was worse is that he didn't even see it, and to this day, doesn't think he has a problem. Going to therapy provided me with many valuable tools, but ultimately, it was the practice of loving kindness that helped me transform my relationship with my dad. I will never...
