("Headspace Studios Jingle") Headspace Studios. (somber music) Hi friends. It's Rosie here. Welcome to "Radio Headspace" and to Thursday. So today we're continuing our week on loving kindness by exploring how we can incorporate this practice when we feel stuck. How do we embrace compassion, both for ourselves and others during these types of challenging times? Let's talk about it. I remember a conversation with my older sister that perfectly encapsulated the essence of my struggle. "I'm stuck," I confessed to her over the phone. I was in the middle of a grueling writing session for a novel I've been laboring over for seven years. A novel, dear friends, that might never see the light of day. Whenever my real life seems to spiral outta control, this fictional world became my escape. I would retreat into it thinking, since the world is not cooperating, I'll create my own. As my sister multitasked on the other end of the line, I continued. "I feel like I'm in that place you go when you die, "you know the the place where you can't quite "get into heaven, that in between realm." She responded, "Purgatory." "Yes, that's it. "I'm in freaking purgatory," I laughed, partly relieved, partly terrified as the old Catholic guilt conditioning still held sway over my mind. "What's troubling you?" she asked, her concern evident but not alarmed. "I just feel like everything "is pointless right now," I said, "absolutely everything. "None of my efforts seem to matter, not this writing, "not my career, not my studies. "It feels like nothing I do works." The truth was I wasn't stuck in the conventional sense. I was just grappling with a profound sense of disconnection. Nothing was aligning with the plans I'd laid out and everything was moving at a glacial pace. Honestly, it felt very lackluster, but then it hit me. There was something deeper at play in this feeling of being in limbo in the in-between. In "Dante's Inferno", there's a journey of trials and tribulations that take place on an epic voyage. So I wondered, do we too have to navigate these trials and failures in our journey to ultimately find a sense of contentment or connection? It got me of this idea of self-compassion and loving kindness, and how we can use this practice when we have this internal struggle. So for me, the definition of compassion is to have a profound desire for suffering to end, and it's a vital ingredient in living a life filled with mindfulness, happiness, and fulfillment. During one of my meditation workshops, I encountered a participant named Maria. She was a talented artist, but felt creatively blocked and emotionally drained. Alas, the life of every struggling artist. She described herself as being stuck in this perpetual cycle of devoted self-criticism. I know that feeling. She was constantly comparing herself to others and feeling like she'd never measure up. This relentless self-judgment was paralyzing her creativity and making it impossible for her...
