Let The Moment Be Messy
An interruption doesn't erase what came before it. The next time something disrupts a moment you were enjoying, notice how quickly your mind declares the whole thing ruined. Giving the experience a little more room can help you stay connected to what was good without fighting what changed.

(click resounds) (warm upbeat music) Headspace Studios. (soft instrumental music) Hey, friends, it's Rosie. Welcome back to Radio Headspace. Have you ever been taken out of a relaxing experience by a bee sting? I have. It had been a while since I'd really unplugged. Enough time away from the constant responding, producing, and keeping up, the days had started to stretch a little differently. And for the first time in a long time, I had a small window of space. No pressing deadlines, no immediate urgency, just time and I didn't quite know what to do with it. At first, I filled it in the way that I always do. A little productivity here, a little organizing there, a few lingering tasks I had convinced myself would make me feel better once they were done. But eventually, I ran out of things to fix, so I went outside. It was one of those Los Angeles summer days where the heat doesn't just surround you. It just sits on your skin. When we moved to the Valley, I had one requirement. The house could be small, that was fine, but it had to have a pool. So that afternoon, after I finished my chores, feeding the dogs, and putting on a little music, I decided to actually use the thing I had insisted on having. I got into the pool and let myself float. No podcast, no phone, just the sound of water moving around me and the heavy hum of the afternoon. And I remember thinking, "This is what I've been needing." I had that quiet, almost smug feeling like I'd finally cracked the code, like I'd figured out how to do self-care properly. And then out of nowhere, I felt it. A sharp sting on my neck. A bee, of course, because life is funny like that. You make space for peace and sometimes you get stung. (gentle instrumental music) (water splashing) I jumped out of the pool holding my neck, half laughing, half annoyed, standing in the kitchen with ice pressed on my skin while Torry looked at me with that sympathetic, "I don't know what to do" face. And I said it out loud, "This is such a metaphor." Because isn't it? We're all just trying to float, trying to carve out moments of stillness, of joy, of meaning. And sometimes right in the middle of that, something unexpected happens, something uncomfortable. Something that interrupts the moment we thought we had perfectly set up. And the instinct is to think, "Well, that ruined it." But it didn't. The float was real. The peace was still real. The presence I felt before the sting was still there. The bee didn't erase the moment. It just became a part of it. And that's the part we forget, right? We think presence has to be uninterrupted in order for it to count. We think peace has to be perfect to be real, but life doesn't work that way. Life is not...
