You Don’t Have To Know Yet

Not knowing can feel almost intolerable, especially when something important is ending or changing. We reach for decisions, explanations, and certainty because they promise relief. But the rush to resolve everything can pull us away from the deeper question of what still feels alive.

Better mental health starts with Headspace

(gentle music) Headspace Studios. Hey friends, it's Rosie here. Welcome back to "Radio Headspace." (gentle music) There's a quote by novelist Walter Mosley. It's been sitting with me lately. He says, "Failure is the heart of art." And I keep coming back to that. Not because I love failing, I don't, but because there's something honest about it. There's no illusion in that statement. No promise that what you make will land the way you want it to. Just the quiet understanding that showing up again and again is the work. (gentle music) Lately, I've noticed something inside myself that feels a little contradictory. As this academic term comes to an end, instead of wanting to slow down, I feel the urge to write more, to create more, which doesn't make much sense on paper. The last few years have been full. Going back to grad school, working full-time, writing, recording, teaching. There are easier ways to live. I know that. But for those of us who are wired toward creativity, ease has never really been the point. We don't create because it's convenient. We create because it's how we make sense of things, because it's one of the only ways to metabolize a world that can feel overwhelming, fractured, and, at times, unbearable. (gentle music) Creativity becomes less about output and more about staying in relationship with what's unresolved. And that relationship isn't always clean. Sometimes what you make doesn't work. Sometimes it doesn't land. Sometimes it feels like you're circling the same idea over and over again. And yet you keep showing up because something in you insists. The new season has been quietly arriving around me. The hummingbirds that crowded our feeders just weeks ago have started to thin out. In their place, the monarchs have returned, drifting over the milkweed like they were called back by something ancient. Everything is shifting, reorganizing, continuing. Midlife has begun to feel like that to me. Not a crisis, but a reorientation. A sense that time is moving whether I feel ready or not. Another year is already in motion, another cycle nearing completion. (gentle music) And beneath it, a question. How do we continue? Not just functionally, but meaningfully. And still, even when I have the answer to that question, insight doesn't remove uncertainty. Even now as I approach the end of another podcast season, one that, by all external measures, has been successful, I find myself returning to the same question I always ask at the end of something. Do I keep going? It's a strange tension, loving something deeply while also questioning it. Loving the process, the writing, the way language can soften something, make meaning out of what feels scattered, and yet standing at the edge of continuation, unsure whether to move forward in the same way or let something shift. Midlife doesn't always resolve that tension. I think it just sharpens it. You become more aware of how you spend your time, more conscious of...
