(light chiming intro) Headspace Studios. Hey, friends, it's Rosie here. Welcome to Radio Headspace. A very wise person once said to me, you can't have a midlife crisis if you're constantly in crisis. And right now, that feels so true because here I am, somewhere between aging gracefully and Googling is it too late to become a backup dancer, wondering if I'm having a midlife crisis, or just finally telling the truth. You know, we used to think that the midlife crisis looked like a shiny sports car in a driveway, a dramatic breakup or a spontaneous move to Bali. But what if it's quieter than that? What if it's realizing your body doesn't bounce back the way it did in your 20s or 30s and neither does your spirit? What if it's waking up one day and thinking, how did I build a life that looks good on paper, but feels kind of off? That's how it started for me. Not a breakdown, a slow unraveling. I wasn't spiraling. I was just unsettled. And then like divine timing, I read this article about how scientists used to track midlife crises using something called the U-shaped happiness curve. Basically, when researchers asked people around the world how happy they were, the data formed a U-shape, super happy in your 20s, sadder and more stressed in your 40s and 50s, and then somehow more content again in old age. It gave scientific backing to what we had all joked about, the dreaded midlife crisis, until recently when the U-curve disappeared. Why? Because now young people are the most unhappy group. The middle of life, the part we used to dread is actually trending upward in happiness. Meanwhile, folks in their 20s and 30s are feeling more lost, more anxious, and more burnt out than ever before. So what does that mean for us, dear elder millennials and Gen Xers? Well, for one, it means this whole midlife crisis thing might not be hardwired into us. It might just be bad branding or worse, compounded expectations. And that brings me back to this idea of change, because the hardest part about getting older isn't the numbers on a birthday cake. It's the pressure to be someone you're not anymore. The pressure to stay the same, even when everything in you is quietly begging to evolve. Let me give you an example. Every time I go to the salon, I walk in ready for change. Like this is it, we're cutting it short. We're going copper, maybe jet black, a bob. We're reinventing everything. And every time, I leave with the same cut, same color, same safe choice Rosie. Why? Because real change is terrifying. And also because apparently I'm non-committal, which is probably why I've never gotten a tattoo. I've wanted one since I was 18, and still nothing. Not because I don't know what I want, but because I know that once it's on me, I can't go back. And maybe...
