(gentle music) Headspace Studios. (gentle music) Hi, welcome back to Radio Headspace, it's Dora. I wanna start with a very human moment. Probably one that many of us have had, a season where my days were full and meaningful, but also very packed. I was working full-time as a nurse, teaching mindfulness in the evenings, building my practice and supporting my family through a tender time. One morning I stood in my kitchen with my phone in my hand, messages stacked up, emails about a class, family text, reminders about things I needed to follow up on. Small things mostly, but so many of them and my system hit a wall. I stood there staring at the screen and couldn't decide what to answer first, my mind felt crowded and my body felt stuck, and that moment helped me name something clearly. This is what it feels to be overwhelmed. This is what I call everyday overwhelm. It's the kind of feeling that comes from too many tabs open in your mind. Too many responsibilities competing for attention. Too little space between demands. The good news is every day overwhelm is workable, and when we understand it, it actually can become a wise teacher. Research shows that when emotional intensity rises, clarity drops. You feel a lot, but your ability to sort in sequence gets fuzzy. The mistake most of us make is trying to outwork overwhelm, push harder, move faster, add more effort. (gentle music) So I built a simple rule for myself, when I notice overwhelm, I pair it with deliberate non-doing, not avoidance, not procrastination, a short, intentional reset. On one packed workday, I felt that familiar mental pile up, task, conversations, messages all pressing at once. I could still function, but just not well. My patience was thinning, my thinking was messy, and instead of grinding through, I said, I am taking 10 minutes just for me. I stepped outside and walked slowly. No phone and no problem solving, just walking, breathing and being, and my mind kept on recruiting me back into planning mode. You should be figuring this out, you are losing time. But I didn't fight the thoughts, I just decided not to follow them. Within minutes, I could feel my nervous system beginning to slow down and settle. My thoughts were lining up instead of colliding, I could see what actually mattered first and what could wait. My to-do list didn't change, but my relationship to it did. In mindfulness, this is what we call equanimity, this practice of not escaping your life, but meeting it with a sense of steadiness and discernment. So here's your practice. When you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, name it. Say to yourself, this is overwhelm, not failure, not incompetence, not proof I can't handle my life, just overwhelm. Try creating short resets. Five to 10 minutes, step outside or even just move your body. Sit and breathe slowly, walk one block, look at the sky. No...
