If You Have the Space to Heal, Start Here
As Dora reflects on her own experience with therapy and mindfulness, she finds herself thinking about her parents, the lives they lived, and what they didn’t have access to. That thought stays with her, and slowly begins to change how she understands her own healing.

(gentle music) Headspace Studios. (gentle music) Hi there, welcome back to "Radio Headspace." It's Dora. I wanna start today's episode with a realization that keeps returning to me. Every time I've had the space to slow down, to reflect, to heal, I'm reminded that this is not something that everyone gets access to. I remember the first time I started therapy and thinking, "I wish my parents could experience this. I wish they had the language for their inner world. I wish they had space to pause and unpack their lives." And then I caught myself. They were living in a different time with different pressures, with very different access to resources. Healing was not the priority, survival was, and that moment stayed with me because it made something very clear: self-discovery is not just personal, it's contextual, and it's deeply shaped by the world that we live in. We often think of healing as an individual choice, something you decide to do once you're ready, something that comes down to motivation or effort. Healing asks very practical questions. Do you have the time to heal? Do you have a safe space to heal? Do you have permission to rest and to feel and reflect? And do you have access to care that supports your nervous system and your mind? These conditions are not evenly distributed, and when we ignore that, we turn healing into something exclusive instead of connective. (gentle music continues) I think about this every time I go on a silent retreat, five days, eight days, sometimes longer, and I'm always struck by the reality of it. Not everyone can take eight days off. Not everyone can afford the cost. Not everyone has childcare, job security, or physical safety that allows for that kind of pause. And again, I think about my parents often in this context. They didn't have access to therapy. They didn't have the language for trauma or nervous system or inner child work. They had responsibilities, bills, people depending on them. So when I sit in reflection now, when I meditate, when I study my inner world, I carry that history with me. This space didn't come out of nowhere, and I try to remember that self-discovery was never meant to make us feel superior. It was meant to bring us closer, closer to ourselves and to each other. Mindfulness is not just a technique, it's a part of a larger path that includes things like ethics, care, and community. And when we forget that, we risk turning awareness into something that's isolating instead of liberating. (gentle music continues) So this is a question that I sit with: what do we do with the privilege of self-discovery? Not from guilt, not from shame, but from responsibility. If you have access to healing, the invitation is not to judge yourself or others. It's to ask, "How does my healing shape how I show up in the world? How does it influence my work, my...
