(insects chirping) (owl hooting) Dusk seeps gently into a timbered lodge perched on the cliffs of Big Sur, where golden light softens into twilight and the horizon seems to blur into the sea. The tall windows now edged in shadow frame the silhouettes of redwood trees that stand like watching giants outside. Their shapes rise upward into the fading blue where the first stars are just beginning to appear. Inside, the air holds a subtle mix of sea salt and wood smoke. A lamp glows amber in the corner. Its light spilling across the grain of a wooden table where a book lies half open. As we prepare for our visit, let's take a moment for a brief wind-down exercise. Tonight's exercise is a really simple breathing exercise. So when you're ready, let's begin. So first, get comfortable in your bed. Now just bringing the attention to the breath, just noticing where you feel it. In the nose, the throat, the chest, the diaphragm. You're nice and relaxed. We are going to be taking a deep breath, in for four, holding it for four, and then breathing out for six. So are you ready? Let's begin. In for four, two, three, four. Hold it for four, two, three, four. Now breathing out for six, two, three, four, five, six. In for four, two, three, four. Holding for four, two, three, four. Out for six, two, three, four, five, six. In for four, two, three, four. Holding for four, two, three, four. Out for six, two, three, four, five, six. In for four, two, three, four. Holding for four, two, three, four. Out for six, two, three, four, five, six. Great. Now returning the breath to normal. (water pelting) (insects chirping) Tucked between folds of the earth, a mountain spring pours quietly from a hillside. The water gathers in a shallow pool, so clear you can count every pebble. Sunset is glimmering on its surface, turning the spring into a reflection of the early evening sky as if it held its own pocket mirror. At its edges, soft mats of moss cling to loose pieces of bark, their emerald fuzz cool to the touch. Ferns lean inward. Their fronds bending toward the water. And from somewhere close by, the steady drip of condensation slides from leaf to leaf until it joins the spring below. A small green frog sits on a cool stone at the water's edge, its skin glistening faintly in the dimness. Another sits nearby, still as a fallen leaf. At the far end of the pool, a bobcat steps forward. Its coat is a mix of tawny gold and sandy brown. The cat's ears stand upright, each tipped with black. It's reminiscent of a house cat in its shape and stride, though larger and sturdier and belonging completely to the forest. (wind whooshing) (insects chirping) Perched on a solitary mound of volcanic rock, Point Sur Lightstation has been standing watch for over 130 years. The rock beneath it is far...
