From a hotel in Abu Dhabi, the shoreline opens in pale sand that meets the quiet roll of the tide. At this hour, the beach is almost empty, except for the faint tracks from turtles pressed into the sand. The sleepy sun is low on the water, turning the turquoise shallows to gold before the ocean carries the light away into dusk. As we prepare for our visit, let's take a moment for a brief wind down exercise. Tonight's exercise is a really simple breathing exercise. So, when you're ready, let's begin. So, first, get comfortable in your bed. Now just bringing the attention to the breath, just noticing where you feel it, in the nose, the throat, the chest, the diaphragm. You're nice and relaxed. We are going to be taking a deep breath. In for four, holding it for four, and then breathing out for six. So are you ready? Let's begin. In for four. Two, three, four. Hold it for four. Two, three, four. Now, breathing out for six. Two, three, four, five, six. In for four. two, three, four. Holding for four. Two, three, four. Out for six. Two, three, four, five, six. In for four. Two, three, four. Holding for four. Two, three, four. Out for six. Two, three, four, five, six. In for four. Two, three, four. Holding for four. Two, three, four. Out for six. Two, three, four, five, six. Great. Now, returning the breath to normal. Just a short drive away, Abu Dhabi's oldest standing structure sits in the heart of the city. Its walls are built from coral and sea stone, blocks once quarried from the seabed and hardened under the sun. The surfaces still show the faint outlines of shells and tiny marine fossils. The building began as a watchtower guarding Abu Dhabi's only fresh water well, and expanded into a fort. Its thick walls and narrow windows built to defend the settlement in its earliest days. Low against the skyline, its whitewashed walls seemed to glow in the setting sun's warmth. Up close, the corals shows its porous texture, rough to the touch, like weathered limestone. Inside, stone courtyards open wide, framed by wooden beams and shaded archways. At sunset, the pale stones, nearly white in the full sun, take on golden peach hues as the low light moves across its surface. The modern city now surrounds the fort, but within its quiet corridors and old coral walls, history lingers. As the sun drops over the gulf, the seaside promenade sparkles along the shoreline. The beachfront walkway stretches beside the sand, its path bordered by cafes, boutiques, and open air terraces. Wide glass fronts catch the last of the light, while lantern-like strands loop between awnings, their sparkle brightening the dusk. Visitors wander slowly along the walkway, pausing every so often to browse the shop windows, woven baskets in earth tones sit beside galleries, hung with coastal photographs. Shelves are stacked with spiced tea and sea shell trinkets, little...
