Why Do I Always Feel Like I'm Not Enough?
Dora has been thinking about what it means to be a good partner, and how easily that desire can turn into pressure to be the best one. No matter how much she gives, there's always another version of herself she could be striving toward. When she shares that feeling with her closest friends, she discovers she's far from alone. Why do so many of us feel like we're falling short, even when we're trying our best? And what if the answer isn't to do more, but to come back to where we are?

(shaker swishing) (keys clacking) (lighthearted music) Headspace Studio. Hi, it's Dora, and you're listening to Radio Headspace. Thanks so much for being here. So I've been thinking a lot lately about my relationship, about being a good partner. And if I'm honest, more than that, about being the best partner, making sure I'm showing up fully, giving enough, present enough, thoughtful enough. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, wanting to be enough, I started to notice something, a kind of low grade hum of not quite measuring up. Like no matter what I was doing, there was a version of it that could be better. A more attentive Dora, a more patient Dora, a Dora who remembered things and said the right thing at the right time and never got tired or distracted or selfish. And I started to wonder, "Is this just me? Is this something specific to relationships or to where I am in my life right now?" And here's what I've come to understand, that feeling of not being enough, it's not a sign that something's wrong with you or that you're somehow behind. I think it's one of the most universal human experiences there is. It moves with us through every stage of life, every role, every relationship. And the only place I've ever found genuine relief from it, not a fix and not a solution, just relief, is in the present moment, right here and right now. The present moment doesn't ask you to be more than you already are. It just asks you to be here. So when I decided to share how I was feeling in a conversation with some of my closest girlfriends, I found that every single one of them was carrying some version of the same thing. One was feeling it at work, like she could never quite do enough or produce enough or be visible enough. One was feeling it as a parent, measuring herself against some standard of motherhood she could never fully reach. One was feeling it in school, surrounded by people who seemed to know more, do more, be further along. And one like me was feeling it in her relationship. Different lives, different circumstances, same ache. Am I enough? Am I doing enough? Am I becoming enough? And what struck me sitting with all of that, theirs and mine together was just how universal this feeling is. It doesn't belong to any one stage of life or any one's circumstance. It follows us. It moves with us from the classroom, to the workplace, to the relationship, to the parent group and back again. We think maybe when I finish this degree, I'll feel like I've done enough. Maybe when the kids are older, maybe when I get the promotion, find the relationship, move to the new city. And then we get there and that feeling is still there, just wearing different clothes. And we also live in a world that's very good at...
