Headspace Studio. Hey friends, it's Rosie here. Welcome to Radio Headspace and to Friday. We live in a time where loneliness has become an epidemic. Studies show that chronic loneliness can have the same health impact as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. That's wild. But here's the thing. Solitude and loneliness are not the same. Solitude when embraced can actually be a source of deep peace, creativity, and self-discovery. The real challenge is learning how to be alone without feeling lonely. There was a time in my life where being alone felt like the worst thing in the world. I filled up every second of my schedule, work, friends, social events just so I didn't have to sit with myself. And I convinced myself that that was just my personality, but the truth, I was terrified of slowing down and being still. Emotion can't hit a moving target. I thought if I kept moving, kept doing, I wouldn't have to face whatever was waiting for me in the quiet. Solitude is not the same as loneliness. In fact, learning to be comfortable in your own company is one of the greatest gifts of getting older because when you stop fearing solitude, you start to realize how much peace, clarity, and strength it can actually bring. This shift happened for me during a solo retreat I took a few years ago. I remember the first night sitting in a quiet cabin. No phone, no distractions, just me. And I hated every second of it. Every part of me wanted to turn on music, call a friend, do something. But the longer I sat with it, the more I realized I wasn't afraid of being alone. I was afraid of what might come up in the silence. Well, I was close to a creek and I was also afraid of La Llorona. More on her in a sec. As I sat there in silence with nothing but the cacophony of thought, the memories, the regrets, the things I had pushed down for years because life was too busy to deal with them, they all were ready for their moment to shine. As the night settled in, I found myself thinking to a bedtime story my Abuelita used to tell me. One she'd pull out, whenever I refused to go to sleep. Enter La Llorona. Now hear me out. If you know the story, you know it's a spooky one, but don't worry, that's not where I'm going with this. So stay with me. The version my Abuelita told wasn't just about scaring kids into coming inside at night. It was about a woman trapped by her past, doomed to wonder because she couldn't let go of what she had lost. And as I sat alone in the cabin resisting the quiet, I realized this was exactly what I'd been doing. I'd spent so much time running from my own thoughts, avoiding the discomfort of solitude that I was carrying around unprocessed emotions...
