Stop Resisting Change — Start Growing Through It

When plans fall apart, it can feel like failure — but often, it’s just life asking us to grow in a different direction. In today’s episode, we explore what trees and Japanese pottery can teach us about healing, shifting, and becoming stronger through change. If you’re feeling stuck or disappointed, this story will help you reframe change as a path, not view it as a problem.

(maraca shakes) (mouse clicks) (soft ethereal music) Headspace Studios. (soft ethereal music) Hey, it's Dora here. Welcome to "Radio Headspace." So a friend of mine recently moved across the country for a new job. She had it all planned out. She found the perfect apartment, mapped out her commute, even picked the cozy local coffee shop that would become her third space. But when she got there, the apartment somehow fell through, the commute was full of delays, and her cozy local coffee shop was not really the welcome-to-the-neighborhood vibe she had hoped for. She called me in full meltdown mode. "Well, I guess I made a huge mistake." And, as humans, we love certainty. It provides us a sense of control and comfort. We make plans because they give us a sense of control. But life has this funny way of tossing our blueprints out the window. We map out careers, relationships, and five-year goals with the confidence of an architect sketching a dream home. But then reality knocks down a few walls, reroutes the plumbing, and suddenly we're standing in the middle of something that looks nothing like what we had envisioned. This week, we're looking to nature for wisdom. On Monday, we explored what rivers teach us about trusting the flow, and today we're tuning into the quiet resilience of trees and the strength that comes, not from standing rigid, but from adapting to what is. When we picture trees, they're solid, immovable things, but the truth is their survival depends on adaptability. They don't resist change, they work with it. There's this incredible tree in California called the bristlecone pine. Some of them are over 5,000 years old, among the oldest living things on the earth. You'd think their secret to longevity would be standing firm and unyielding, right? But no. The reason they survive is because they bend, they adjust, they shift with their environment. When the soil gets rocky, their roots don't stop growing. They find new paths. When winds come in, they bend with the breeze. When droughts hit, they slow their growth instead of trying to force something that isn't sustainable. The same principle applies to the human experience. We're told to stand our ground, to stick to the plan, but sometimes the real wisdom is in knowing when to adjust and pivot. It reminds me of this Japanese philosophy called kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Instead of hiding the cracks, the fractures are traced in shimmering gold veins, turning the breaks into a part of the beauty. The history of the object isn't erased, it's honored. Trees, kintsugi, my friend's moving crisis is all the same lesson. The most resilient things in life aren't the ones that refuse to change. They're the ones that adapt. Eventually, my friend stopped trying to make her new city fit the version she had in her head. Instead of mourning the coffee shop that wasn't quite right, she found a cute bakery with...
