Feeling Rigid or Defensive? Try This
When you notice yourself gripping tightly to being right, holding tension in your body, or moving through conversations with defensiveness, pause for a moment. Soften your shoulders, lower your gaze slightly, and ask yourself: what would it feel like to meet this moment with reverence instead of control.

(bright music) Headspace Studios. (birds chirping) Hey friends, it's Rosie here. Welcome back to Radio Headspace. I was just in New York recently, sitting in a lobby of a hotel that had that familiar hum of movement. Rolling suitcases, espresso machines hissing, elevator doors opening and closing like clockwork. I was there with two dear friends of mine who are Jane Monks. Brilliant women, talented filmmakers, and deep thinkers. We had worked together on a docu-series, and this was one of those rare in-between moments where you're not on stage, you're not on camera, you're not teaching, you're just talking. And we talked for hours. We were sitting in oversized lobby chairs leaning in, hands moving as we spoke. The conversation moved effortlessly. From the project, to life, to love, to relationships, to purpose, to the strange tension between ambition and surrender. It was the kind of conversation where time dissolves, and you forget that there are other people around you. At one point, a woman approached us and said, "I've been watching you ladies for the last couple hours, and I just wanted to say hello. You look very engaged." And we laughed, because we were. (light music) There's something about being in the presence of people who are deeply committed to a spiritual path that changes the texture of a conversation. It slows you down. It deepens your listening. It invites a kind of sincerity that doesn't need anything other than presence. When it finally was time to leave, I stood up, I hugged them, and I began to walk away, and then something unexpected happened. I felt an instinctual urge to bow. No one asked me to. It wasn't required. It wasn't ceremonial. It was just this quiet impulse that rose up in my body, a soft lowering of the head, a small acknowledgement, and it made me wonder, why do we bow? (birds chirping) In Buddhism and in many Hindu traditions, bowing is not about hierarchy. It's not about shrinking. It's not about saying, you are greater and I am less. It's about recognizing something sacred in the other person, and in yourself. It's a gesture of humility, but not humiliation. It's a recognition that the divine, the awareness, the consciousness that animates me, is the same that animates you. When monks bow, they're not worshiping a person, they're honoring the Buddha nature in each other, or the potential for awakening that lives in every being. And in that hotel lobby, without thinking about it intellectually, I felt that. I felt reverence, not for them as personalities, not because they're monks, but for the depth of the exchange, for the shared humanity, for the reminder that we're all just trying to live wisely, even if we do it imperfectly. There's a moment in life when the head lowers, not out of defeat, but out of truth. Humility is often misunderstood. We think it means thinking less of ourselves, dimming our light, making ourselves small. But real...
