Chapter II: Breathe to the Light Side
In Chapter II of Find your Force, a new family and kids mindfulness series from Headspace and Star Wars™, Chewbacca™ and BB-8™ are off … very slowly … to Tatooine™ in search of a part that’ll fix the Falcon’s hyperdrive. As they play a game of Dejarik™ to pass the time, Headspace expert Samantha Snowden shows us a mindfulness exercise for being a good sport — because having fun with our friends is the best prize of all.

Chewy and BB-8 were just beginning their journey to Kashyyyk when the hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon blew. So they're making a pit stop on Tatooine to search for the missing part. This is about to be one slow trip, but with the power of mindfulness, the Force is always with us. I'm Sam from Headspace. It's time to Find your Force with Star Wars on a journey with Chewbacca and BB-8. (gentle music) (BB-8 beeping) (Chewbacca groaning) (BB-8 beeping) (creatures growling) (Chewbacca roaring) When we're playing with our friends, it doesn't feel that good to lose. Some of us take it harder than others, but being a good sport is important. Games are all about having fun, aren't they? I have an exercise that I think will help Chewy feel a little bit better. Wanna try it? Great. First, let's check in with ourselves and our frustration meter. Pay attention to how you feel inside. How upset are you feeling on a scale of one to 10? (Chewbacca roaring) A nine out of 10, that's pretty frustrated. Let's acknowledge that feeling, and let it be just as it is. Now let's notice the urges that you might have when you feel this way. Maybe you're so upset that you just wanna roar. We can notice these urges, but remember, you don't have to follow them. Good. Now that we know how we're feeling, whether that's frustrated, upset, or even angry, let's relax a bit by counting some deep breaths. Ready? In through your nose, and out through your mouth. Breathe in, one, and out, one. Breathe in, two, and out, two. Three, three. And four, four. So how did that feel? Remember that everyone gets angry sometimes. Anger and other feelings like sadness can help us notice the things that we might be needing. Since Chewy is upset about losing the game, maybe he just needs some words of comfort, and to focus on more helpful thoughts. One helpful thought he can remember is that everyone loses games sometimes. It doesn't mean he's a bad player. And celebrating a friend winning can be lots of fun too. So let's check back in on that frustration meter. Where's Chewy at now? That's great. Helpful thoughts can really change how we feel. So let's keep going. Chewy can think about his friend BB-8, and how he loves playing games with him. He can remember that his anger will pass. It's hard to lose, but it's normal to feel frustrated. He can try to enjoy playing, even when he doesn't win. Nice work. Now we can arrive at Tatooine in a positive mood, ready to find that missing part and fix the Falcon. Knowing that no matter what we're doing, or where we are in the galaxy, we always have the power to find our Force again. All it takes is a little mindfulness. The journey continues next week in chapter three where Chewy and BB-8 search Tatooine for that missing piece....
