(gentle music) So, just taking a moment to find a comfortable position wherever you happen to be right now. Sitting in the car after a long shift, resting at your desk, or finding a quiet corner at home and taking a few deep breaths in and out. In and out. And just letting your breath return to its natural rhythm. (gentle music) Fatherhood is perhaps the most significant and complex and rewarding project we ever take on. It often comes with a quiet, persistent kind of pressure, a weight we carry that we don't always talk about. We're gonna explore that a little and maybe find a slightly different way of thinking about what it means to show up for our children. So often, we approach parenting like a carpenter approaches a piece of wood, seeing a challenge and wanting a solution, seeing a behavior and wanting to correct it. We have a vision in our minds of who our child should be, how they should act, what success looks like for them. And when things don't fit that vision, that's often when the anxiety creeps in. We wonder where we went wrong. We reach for a little more control, trying to match the vision we've built. Just for a moment, noticing where that pressure to fix, to correct, to get it right actually sits in your body. (gentle music) No need to do anything with it right now, just noticing it's there. (gentle music) Now here's another way of thinking about all of this. Parenting is maybe less like carpentry and more like gardening. A gardener doesn't make a plant grow. They can't force a seed to bloom faster or decide what kind of plant it becomes. What they can do is notice a seed that's actually there, not the one they imagined, and offer it to the right soil, the right light, the water and attention needs to grow in its own way, at its own pace. A good gardener isn't measuring the plant every day or comparing it to what's growing next door. They're just trusting the process, showing up day-after-day, offering the conditions for something to grow strong in its own particular way. (gentle music) So maybe part of parenting is loosening our grip on the outcome and leaning a little more into just being present for the process. Next time you notice the urge to fix your child or to steer them somewhere specific, you might remember that you're the gardener here. Not to manufacture a perfect result, but to be the soil, the light, the steady presence that lets them find out who they actually are rather than who you pictured they'd be. (gentle music) There's something in that which takes some of the pressure off of you. Now just bringing your child to mind, not thinking about what needs to change or what they should be working towards, just picturing them, noticing them exactly as they are. And know that simply by pausing here,...
