If you are feeling overwhelmed right now, like you don't know who you are or what comes next, take comfort in knowing you don't have to go anywhere or become anything in the next five minutes. Feel your feet on the floor. Feel the simple, undeniable fact of your presence right here, right now. Wrap your arms around yourself in a warm embrace. You're not drifting away. You are right here. Your body exists even when your sense of self is unclear. This is a constant that you can always return to. When our identity shifts or our life roles change, our brain can spin into overdrive, trying to solve a problem that can't be fixed in a single day. So let's give your mind a break by bringing your attention to your breath. Take a slow, deep breath in and let it go with a long, gentle exhale. Again, breathing in slowly and breathing out, allowing your shoulders to soften. One more deep breath in and a long, complete breath out. For these next few moments, nothing needs to be figured out. Instead, simply notice what is here. Begin by listening to the sounds around you. Notice when one sound feels close by. Now, see if you can hear another sound further away. Perhaps there is a quieter sound even underneath those sounds, something you hadn't noticed until just now. There's no need to identify where each sound is coming from. Simply allow them to come and go within your awareness. Now bring your attention back to your body. Notice the places where your body is making contact with the world around you, your feet against the floor, the weight of your body against the chair or the bed or the surface beneath you, the feeling of your clothing resting against your skin. Notice the temperature of the air around you. Perhaps you can feel warmth in one part of your body or coolness somewhere else. Now notice the feeling of your arms around you, the warmth of your hands, the gentle pressure of your embrace. See if you can find one sensation that feels familiar to you right now. Maybe it's the feeling of your feet on the floor, the texture of your clothing, the warmth of your hands, or the familiar rhythm of your breath moving in and out. Even in the middle of change, moments of familiarity can still be found. Your sense of who you are may feel uncertain, but you're still here breathing, sensing and experiencing this moment. The environment around you is stable. The ground beneath you is steady. Even though your internal world is changing or reorganizing, the physical world is holding you safe right now. When we feel lost, it's often because the story we held about our life has changed, but you are not only the story, you're the one living it. Feeling lost can be what transition feels like from the inside. It's not necessarily a sign that something's wrong. It may simply be an indication that change is occurring. It's okay to not know who you're becoming yet. Silently reminding yourself, "I'm in the middle of something. I don't need to have...
