Finding True Rest

We don’t always have to be strong or productive. Sometimes, it’s helpful to remind ourselves that we deserve to set down some of the weight we’re carrying.

Hello and welcome. In honor of Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month, this practice invites us to reflect on rest and what that means for us. For some, it's often seen as something we have to earn, not something we inherently are worthy of receiving. For many of us, our stories are shaped by people who worked incredibly hard, people who crossed borders, built homes, cared for families, learn new languages, made something out of very little, or sacrificed their own comfort so that the next generation might have more choices. We may carry their strength within us. And sometimes without realizing it, we may also carry the belief that we always have to be strong, that our value comes from how much we produce, how much we endure, or how much we carry without asking for help. So today, we're going to practice setting some of that weight down. Let's begin. Find a position that feels supportive for you. You might be sitting, lying down, or standing. Let your body choose what it needs today. If it's comfortable, allow your eyes to close or simply soften your gaze toward the floor. Take a moment and notice that you have arrived. There's nowhere else you need to be right now. Nothing to solve. Nothing you need to prove. Just allowing yourself to take one slow, full breath in and a long, easy breath out. Again, inhaling in, taking your time, and gently exhaling out. Allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm. No need to force it or change it. Simply noticing the body breathing. Let your shoulders relax. Perhaps feeling the breath in the chest, the belly, the nostrils. Noticing where the breath feels most available to you, and allow your attention to rest there. Now begin to notice the places where your body is being supported. Feel the ground beneath your feet, the chair beneath you, the surface holding the weight of your body. See whether you can allow yourself to be held even just a little more. You do not have to hold yourself up entirely. As you breathe, notice whether there's any tension in your body associated with effort. Perhaps the jaw is tight. Maybe your shoulders are lifted or your hands are gripping. There's no need to judge or immediately change what you find. This is simply an opportunity to notice. You might silently say, "This is what effort feels like in my body." And then, with your next exhale, see whether you can soften by just a little bit more, just enough to remind the body that it is allowed to pause. Many of us learned directly or indirectly that resting meant we were being lazy. That we should always be doing something useful. That there was always one more person to help. One more task to complete. One more responsibility waiting for us. Perhaps you learned to anticipate what everyone else needed before considering what you needed. Perhaps you became very good at...
