Better mental health starts with Headspace

Whatever's ahead of you right now, an interview, a first date, a hard conversation, a stage, a starting line, your body might already be preparing you for it. The heart is beating a little faster, butterflies fluttering in your belly, thoughts racing. These signals are human, but not always helpful. And the good news is we can guide that energy somewhere more useful, rather than spinning and spiraling. And the breath is one of the fastest ways to channel this energy for your benefit. So for the next few minutes, we're going to breathe together using a simple technique. We'll breathe in for four, hold for seven, and breathe out for eight. As you breathe in through your nose, imagine filling a balloon with air in your belly. And as you breathe out your mouth, imagine blowing out a candle. I'll guide you through the exercise, but please breathe at a pace that feels right for you. So if it feels good, allowing the eyes to close or just softening your gaze downward. Making sure you're sitting upright, resting both hands on the legs or down by your side. Taking a deep breath in and a long breath out. Now, breathing in through the nose for one, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and out through the mouth for two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. In, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Out, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. In, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Out, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. And again, in, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Out, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. And just unclenching the jaw, letting the shoulders drop a little more each time, and just continuing to breathe, following that pattern and that breath. In for four, hold for seven, and out for eight. Just doing this three more times. Feeling the body soften and letting go of any tension or tightness. In, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Out, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Just returning the breath back to its natural rhythm and pace on the next exhale. And just noticing any shifts or changes in the mind and body. Maybe there's a little more room, a little more ease or calm. The intention of this practice isn't to feel calm all the time. It's more about maintaining a sense of calm despite whatever is happening around you. You just need this breath and the next one and the one after that. So take one more final breath in and out. And when you're ready, opening your eyes....
