Frequently asked questions

  • When you play relaxing focus music in the background while studying or knuckling down on a project, it provides a sound that’s not too vigorous to be distracting, and not too quiet for the mind to wander from its source of concentration; in other words, focus music is perfectly weighted to occupy the mind sufficiently and keep you “in the zone”. We have a whole collection of music — from John Legend to Hans Zimmer, from jazzy mixes to cinematic soundtracks to lo-fi beats — to help you find and keep your focus while studying.

  • If the music isn’t too dynamic and upbeat, and if you’re not listening to a favorite artist whose lyrics will prove absorbing, then turning on some beats while studying can help you knuckle down to study. Relaxing focus music needs to be just that — relaxing, not distracting. Low-level music works in pretty much the same way ambient noise does, masking other sounds in your surrounding environment that could prove distracting and take you out of the moment. We have our own version of relaxing focus music dedicated to studying. ‘Study Beats’ is designed for you to tune out distractions by playing almost an hour of lo-fi beats which can be played on repeat.

  • The best form of relaxing focus music is a sound/instrumental that is gentle, rhythmic, repetitious, and sustained — enough for the mind to softly latch onto without getting swept away. Classical music, cinematic soundtracks, or laid back beats are often effective when it comes to finding relaxing focus music. Once you’ve found the music that works best, you might want to create your own focus playlist — a popular feature in the Headspace app where playlists are curated with your focus in mind. All you have to do is press “play”, get in the zone, and start studying.

  • It’s always going to be a matter of personal taste as to which type of music helps you to focus best. That’s why the Headspace music library — filled with different choices of relaxing focus music — has so much variety because everyone is different. It’s worth exploring because numerous playlists feature celebrated artists, musicians, and composers. ‘Study Beats’ was designed with your studying in mind, to be played on repeat.
