Getting older just seems to happen, doesn't it? There's no grand announcement, no ceremony. One day you just wake up and you realize that the landscape has shifted. For most of our lives, we are planting seeds and racing against seasons. We're putting things into the ground like careers, families, responsibilities, and we're tending to these diligently. But at some point, the garden changes. The children don't seem to need us in the same way. The career isn't pulling at us like it used to, and the to-do list gets a little shorter. It can feel like a loss, like the garden is winding down, and like maybe you are too, but that's not what's happening at all. What's happening is a shift from growing to tending, from producing to appreciating. The garden you spent a lifetime building, it's right there in front of you. When you were planting, maybe you didn't really have a chance to notice it. And now you can see it's more beautiful than you ever realized. There's a different kind of work now. It's a quieter work. It's passing on seeds to people coming up behind you, noticing which flowers came back on their own, finding meaning in moments you used to rush past, like the conversation with a grandchild that goes longer than planned, or even the walk you take for no reason other than just to take it. This is what meaning looks like now. Not as busy, but it's just as full. Your worth was never just in how much you got done. It was in who you became. The garden isn't ending. It's just fully in bloom....
