Focusing on activity

As an idea, meditation is incredibly simple, but in practice it can be rather more challenging. Obstacles are common and it’s important that we feel comfortable and confident with that, knowing that others are experiencing just the same thing. In the third part of Focus pack Andy is discussing technique of focusing on particular activity of your life (work, for example) in a way you're focusing on the parts of your body with a help of the light beam.
But I don't quite get this idea, how can you focus in this way on some "not physical" aspects of your work?
Could anyone please explain in details this technique?
