Pain and keeping a sense of calm

I have been using the Headspace app for 9 months now and find it really helps with the sense of calm. I also have chronic pelvic pain with numerous causes and find that the pain takes away this sense of calm when it flares up severely. How can I keep this sense of calm and stop focusing on the pain using meditation?

Yeah, dealing with chronic or acute pain during meditation can be very distracting at first. It is easy to think that it is somehow getting in the way of our peace and quiet. But it is worth asking the question 'what is making the noise, is it the pain or our resistance to the pain?". Learning to sit with the discomfort, at one with it (at the risk of sounding like an old hippy) is the secret here....we need to make friends with the pain, let go of the resistance and simply be present with whatever is happening in that moment. if we can do that, then the mind is naturally calm.
