Headspace for Insomnia - Part 4: last but not least, relationships.

Quite unsurprisingly, I have also seen a noticeable difference in my relationships since I started meditating. Clearly, because I have started to sleep,  I now have more patience and alertness to go around. I go out more, I snap at loved ones less and I no longer think when I am out socialising, 'this is all great, but I would rather be in bed.' But aside from sleep it has also made me a kinder person, with more time on my hands. I started committing to doing less so that the time I did spend with friends was quality time and I had a whole evening or afternoon as opposed to just a drink or coffee. I stopped talking on the phone when washing up/cooking/ tidying up because I wanted to be mindful.


While meditation hasn’t made me love my loved ones more than I did (as I was already pretty crazy about them) it made me love them more ably. The headspace technique of visualizing how your meditation helps others really makes being kind to friends and family a daily 'self promise'. When I picture my fiancee benefiting from my meditation and see his smiling face in my head, I want to make that a reality! When we are about to fall out over something stupid and insignificant, like leaving late to go to a wedding, the image of his happy face pops in to my head and I hold my tongue.

In short, as you have read, it is easy to see what amazing positive effects meditation has had on my life. The one tip I’d give anyone starting out is to make sure you do it every day for at least the first three months before missing a single day. Make it part of your morning routine and you will see the difference it makes to your life. Don't look out for them, it will just happen. If you are starting meditation because you are an insomniac all I can say is don’t take my word for it. Try it for yourself because it works, and you are 15 minutes a day away from getting your life back.
